چکیده

Zwitterionic surfaces are increasingly explored as antifouling coatings due to their propensity resist protein, bacterial, and cell adhesion typically applied polymeric systems. Here, the self-assembly of strongly interacting small molecule amphiphiles is reported produce nanoribbons for applications. Synthesized spontaneously form micrometers-long with nanometer-scale cross-sections intrinsically display a dense coating zwitterionic moieties on surfaces. Substrates coated demonstrate concentration-dependent thicknesses near superhydrophilicity. These surface then probed properties substantial reductions demonstrated in protein adsorption, bacterial biofilm formation, relative uncoated controls. Harnessing cohesive self-assembling nanomaterials offers facile route effective

Surface anchored metal-organic frameworks as stimulus responsive antifouling coatings.

Surface-anchored, crystalline and oriented metal organic frameworks (SURMOFs) have huge potential for biological applications due to their well-defined and highly-porous structure. In this work we describe a MOF-based, fully autonomous system, which combines sensing, a specific response, and the release of an antimicrobial agent. The Cu-containing SURMOF, Cu-SURMOF 2, is stable in artificial se...

Antifouling coatings for optoelectronic tweezers.

Optoelectronic tweezers enables parallel manipulation of individual single cells using optical addressing and optically induced dielectrophoretic force. This provides a useful platform for performing a variety of biological functions, such as cell manipulation, cell sorting, and cell electroporation. However, in order to obtain more reliable cellular manipulation, especially of adherent mammali...

In Situ Surface Tailoring with Zwitterionic Carboxybetaine Moieties on Self-Assembled Thin Film for Antifouling Biointerfaces

A novel biointerface bearing zwitterionic carboxybetaine moieties was developed for effective resistance to nonspecific adsorption of proteins and blood cells. Self-assembled thin films (SAFs) of (N,N-dimethylaminopropyl) trimethoxysilane were formed as mattress layers by either vapor or solution deposition. Subsequently, the tertiary amine head groups on SAFs were reacted with β-propiolactone ...

Modern approaches to marine antifouling coatings

Marine structures such as platforms, jetties and ship hulls are subject to diverse and severe biofouling. Methods for inhibiting both organic and inorganic growth on wetted substrates are varied but most antifouling systems take the form of protective coatings. Biofouling can negatively affect the hydrodynamics of a hull by increasing the required propulsive power and the fuel consumption. This...

Formation and antifouling properties of amphiphilic coatings on polypropylene fibers.

We describe the formation of amphiphilic polymeric assemblies via a three-step functionalization process applied to polypropylene (PP) nonwovens and to reference hydrophobic self-assembled n-octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS) monolayer surfaces. In the first step, denatured proteins (lysozyme or fibrinogen) are adsorbed onto the hydrophobic PP or the ODTS surfaces, followed by cross-linking with g...
